Did you know that the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand is home to five magnificent Himalayan peaks, capped with snow and seemingly reaching straight into the sky? They are called the “Panchachuli Mountains.” These beautiful mountains are located near Dugtu village in the Darma Valley, in the eastern part of the Kumaon region.
If you want to see the most captivating view of these magnificent mountains, then there is no better place than Munsiyari hill station, situated at an altitude of about 2,200 meters above sea level.

What is the legend behind this name?
Why are these mountains named “Panchachuli” ? A very interesting belief from the Mahabharata period is behind this. “Panchachuli” means five stoves, meaning cooking fires. According to mythology, when the five Pandavas were ending their life journey and departing for heaven, they cooked their last meal at this very spot. In memory of these five brothers’ five stoves, these towering mountains were named “Panchachuli.”
These peaks range in height from 6,334 meters to 6,904 meters. Due to their high altitude, frequent blizzards and extensive glaciers make climbing extremely challenging. This is why this location particularly attracts experienced and adventurous mountaineers. If you’re planning a trip, the best times are between March and June and September and November.
It is like a paradise for trekking enthusiasts.
