According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva challenged his sons Lord Ganesha and Lord Kartikeya that whoever circles the universe seven times first will get the honor of being worshipped first. Hearing this, Lord Kartikeya set out to circle the universe on his vehicle, whereas, Lord Ganesha circled his parents, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati seven times. Lord Shiva gave Lord Ganesha the privilege of being worshipped first. Lord Kartikeya showed anger at this decision and sacrificed his body and bones to his father as an act of reverence.
