Every year 21st June is celebrated by people all over the world as International Yoga Day. The day aims to raise public awareness of the many benefits of yoga and inspire yoga practitioners around the world for physical and mental health.
International Yoga Day started from the year 2015. In fact, in September 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed the idea of Yoga Day during his address to the 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly. Subsequently, on 11 December 2014, all the 193 member states of the United Nations unanimously agreed to celebrate International Yoga Day on 21 June, after which the first International Yoga Day was celebrated on 21 June 2015.
Why is Yoga Day celebrated only on 21st June?
June 21 was decided to celebrate Yoga Day because according to the calendar, June 21 is the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere. This is called summer solstice, after which the Sun is in Dakshinayan. When the Sun is on the south side, its brightness decreases, due to which the environment becomes impure, germs are generated and immunity decreases. In such a situation, June 21 has been chosen as the International Yoga Day to achieve spiritual attainments and to keep the mind and body healthy.
